Jared Monti - American Hero

Jared Monti was awarded the Medal of Honor, posthumously, yesterday. He was an Army Forward Observer. You can read more about him at the links below. He's important to us, because he was also a JFO. We train JFOs here at Ft. Sill. They'll be dedicating the new JFO building (Monti Hall) in his honor later this fall.

Just happened to check your blog and found this about Jared.
I checked the links and found the comment about all Medal of Honor recipents recently have been posthumosly given. He asked don't living soldiers preform acts of bravery that should be honored? I too wonder why more medals are not being given....

You mentioned that the training at Ft. Sill is for JFO's....What does JFO stand for? Are you part of this training? It sounds like Jared was doing the same kind of thing you did when in Afghanistan......

JFO stands for Joint Fires Observer. Its not exactly what I do. I'm a JTAC, Joint Tactical Air Controller. We're authorized to give clearance for aircraft weapons release. The JFO gets a similar training set, but their function is to extend a JTACs eyes on the battlefield. So a JTAC can get targeting data from a JFO on a target he can't see and prosecute the same as if it was a target he had eyes on due to the training a JFO receives.
